Need some serious cholesterol? Nothing like a good “patatje met mayonnaise” on a cold winter sunday. Served and eaten smothered in mayonnaise or with mayo & saté sous and unions (=patat oorlog = war fries), available nearly everywhere. But not all is good. Short frying times are often causing serious disappointment. The best one’s are homemade and nice, brown and crispy, served in a paper cone with so much mayonnaise on ‘em that it’s impossible to eat them and feel sexy at the same time.
Here are my favorite locations:
- Vlaams Friteshuis – Famous for a reason. Only disadvantage is the long queue. Especially in the weekend.
- Raspatat Snackbar – Not sure what the name of the place is but there is only one snackbar in de tweede goudsbloemdwarsstraat so you can’t miss it. They are one of the few places in Amsterdam that still do raspatat. It’s basically fake fries made out of mashed potatoes. Fat but delicious!
- Morningstar (Het Houten Huis) aka Delores. – This lunch shed servers biological food only. All is good, but their biological fries are tha bomb!
- Eiburgh Snacks – Two old guys peeling and cutting kilo’s of patatoes by hand every morning makes this one my favorite. Very nice homemade chips. It’s not on number one since it’s so far out of the center.
- Manneken Pis -Famous and good, but not my favorite. The shop of the same name (and owner) in Utrecht won the official award for being best fries place in the country.
Thanx to Yanna and Isabel for helping me out on this one.
