Unfortunately free wifi in Amsterdam is not so commonplace as at is in New York for example. As a matter of fact, it can be real hard to find when you need it and I find myself sometimes crossing all through town to get the digital juices flowing. So for all you addicts; here’s where you can hook yourself up:
- Nieuwmarkt - Nieuwmarkt is a square in Amsterdam with quite some café’s on it. In the middle of the square is ‘the waag institute’ that supplies free wifi for almost the whole square. So pick your favorite ambiance and surf away.
- Pakhuis de Zwijger – To the east of central station is Pakhuis de Zwijger, platform for innovation and creation. A place with lots of seminars, network meetings, cultural thingies and … free wifi. They’re used to people with laptops and are perfectly conformable with you working there for a couple of hours. If fact, the place is packet with shiny MacBooks. Coffee, sandwitches, dinner, etc available.
- De Balie – The cultural and political hot spot of Amsterdam. On the Leidseplein (Kleine Gartmanplantsoen acctually, but thats the same) so it’s nice and central. Perfect place to hang around for a while.
- OBA – The (new!) library. Free entrance and the only place on the list where you are not allowed to order something. Go have a look, they’ve just opend and it is real cool and hip. With lots of laptop slots but also desktops you can use. And all sorts of chill corners and items, you can chill out in / upon / underneath / etc. Nothing you would expect from a library. Very close to central station.
- Bagels & Beans -
Contrary to the Coffee Company, the Bagels and Beans chain does offer free wifi. The more popular Coffee Company only offers payed wifi.B&B can be found all over town. EDIT: Coffee Company now offers free wifi as well. Ask for your receipt after ordering coffee. You’re wifi acces code will be on the receipt.
